Taking its name from one of Adonis' exquisite poems, Between Your Eyes and Mine, this project explores intimacy, identity, and the lived realities of Chinese students pursuing art and fashion in the UK.
The work emerged from my own experiences and anxieties after completing my master’s degree. Grappling with the challenges of studying abroad, I began to question whether this path was truly the right choice. Instead of turning inward, I shifted my focus outward—towards others like me. From 2022 to 2024, I documented the lives of more than 30 Chinese students, visiting their homes and capturing their unique living spaces. Despite their temporary nature, these spaces reflected personal stories and cultural imprints, transforming ordinary environments into intimate portraits of identity.
This project also delves into the broader phenomenon of Chinese students migrating to the UK, particularly those drawn by its prestigious art and education systems. These portraits serve as a lens to reflect on themes of choice, belonging, and the emotional landscapes shaped by cultural and physical transitions.
Ultimately, Between Your Eyes and Mine is less about seeking definitive answers and more about embracing the shared vulnerability and resilience present in these lives. Through this body of work, I hope to connect viewers with the quiet yet profound moments that define our sense of self and connection.
