Tamar Shemesh is a visual storyteller and international development practitioner whose work is grounded in long-term, close engagement with communities. She is a graduate of the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York and holds a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as well as an M.A. in Sustainable Development from the University of Padova.
Her practice is informed by anthropological research and participatory methodologies. Her master’s thesis examined Photovoice as a tool for collaborative image-making. These approaches shape her visual work, which explores identity, femininity, and cultural practice. Her recent documentary work examines the meanings women assign to performance within religious practice.
Shemesh is a member of Diversify Photo, an NPPA mentee, an Eddie Adams Workshop alumna, and has been a contributor to Middle East Images and Native Agency. Her work has appeared in TIME, DIE ZEIT, ELLE Magazine, INSIDER, and Ha’aretz, among others.
