2014-2016 Artist statment Haeundae Beach, surrounded by high-rise buildings surrounding the sea, is Korea's best summer resort, attracting hundreds of thousands of people every day in summer. It is always crowded with people as it is a place where events, events, and festivals are common all year round. People visit Haeundae Beach to enjoy tourism, relaxation and leisure, but there is only forced leisure and consumption. These aspects were more evident because the white sand expansion work was underway during the three years of working on Haeundae Beach. As if displaying on a show window, the white sand was expanded, the sea was filled, and an underwater breakwater was installed. In addition, the stage equipment is changed by making and breaking sand dunes whenever an event is held. Why are people flocking to Haeundae Beach, which is so thoroughly equipped? It may not just be because of the hot desire of the summer season and vague longing for a romantic sea. All you have to do is look at the horizon and dream of escaping the city, and then turn around, and Haeundae, the place of desire where the city as it is, or the place where the most splendid stage that the modern city boasts, is prepared. This is the most familiar playground for modern people who have already become accustomed to forced leisure and consumption, and this is Haeundae Beach. People who walk around Haeundae Beach cannot escape from the daily life of the city they left. Haeundae is not the sea, but the center of the city. It is our compulsory daily life in the modern consumer society that we have no choice but to take a picture of the concrete-colored sea in the background to confirm the existence of anxiety and enjoy the thoroughly commercialized sea. Today, I am taking pictures of people coming and going in the same way on Haeundae Beach. With their backs to high-rise buildings. Eventually, they and I will only add a day to their boring daily lives.
