Growing up in Lagos exposed me to the devastating impact of plastic pollution, particularly in contributing to environmental problems like flooding. Fueled by a commitment to improved waste management and sustainability, I took this photograph, using art as a catalyst for change. Departing from traditional documentary style, I embraced metaphorical depiction, challenging norms to evoke deep emotional response. My stay on the outskirts of Lagos, enabled me to observe a lack of awareness about proper waste disposal. In response, I actively involve myself in the collection of waste, and transforming it into art—an unconventional approach that uniquely addresses the issue and inspires a vision of a cleaner environment. Through inventive lighting, impactful compositions, and a focus on form and texture, this photograph explores the intricate connection between humans, plastic waste, and the environment. This image serves as a testament to the hazardous relationship between plastic and our ecosystem, urging collective responsibility to protect the environment and drive positive change. My aim with this photograph is to guide viewers on a contemplative artistic journey, underscoring the urgent need for proper waste management.
