I discovered Miami Beach in 1988 and fell in love with this Art Deco strip of fabricated shoreline that attracted an exotic mix of ‘Snowbirds’ [Jewish retirees from the north], Cubans [following Castro’s emptying of the jails of criminals, drug addicts, gays and polticos], a thriving LGBT com- munity and then the fashionistas, including Gianni Versace.
This was the first time that I chose to shift from my 35mm fast street photography and work with an old Rolleiflex and interview the subjects in a slower, more considered way.
The result of seven years of trips was the book ‘Miami Beach 1985-92’.
