“POLTAVALAND: Ukraine’s Place of Power”, (2019-2021) is a long-term project containing over 100 images.
Poltava region is one of the most unique and historically interesting places in Ukraine, with its own universe and mythology. It is also known for its mysterious atmosphere and unusual concentration of talented people. Famous writers and poets have written about Poltava, and often either lived there or had personal connection to this place. Poltava’s culture, mythology, architecture, and religious / mystical beliefs originate in a peculiar blend between Eastern European and Asian (Mongolian, Turkish, Caucasus) influences, between Paganism, Orthodox Christianity, and even Islam. Looking at Poltava from above, one would see a vast territory of wild nature that blends with people’s homes in the most organic way. This place is charged with incredibly powerful energy. Since Russia’s attacks on Ukraine, local people feel more than ever attached and protective of their land. Quitting their artistic dream-worlds, they are now creating weapons, and saving thousands of people seeking refuge from the nearby attacked zones. My maternal grandmother was born in Poltava, and I feel a very strong connection to this place and the people. I really hope that Poltava will maintain its “magical power” to stay protected in this horrific war.
