Aziz Menebhi has led an eventful life, a winding path marked by his unwavering commitment to social justice. Involved in the leadership of student protests against the monarchy in his homeland of Morocco in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was imprisoned and tortured for three years and eight months. Upon release, he feared assassination and managed to escape to Spain with a fake passport. He eventually sought asylum in France, a place he and his family have been calling home ever since. Yet the distance did not steer him away from his original struggle as he remained involved with networks of activists and human rights organizations. Entering a new chapter of his life, Aziz focuses now on building a legacy for younger generations, for instance by working on a biography to be released soon. This photograph, featured on the front page of the book, also belongs to an ongoing multimedia project undertaken by myself and his son, sound-engineer and musician Elias Menebhi.
