Photographer Jianling Cui went to the countryside to aim the camera at traditional village hairdressers.
Jianling Cui did not admire the higher classes that possess social powers and wealth. Instead, she praises those workers who are ordinary. Regardless of farmland or small towns, these craftsmen who works in unset locations outdoors are all given the status of a hero by her. Like sculptures, these village hairdressers become an eternal symbol on earth.
These photographs also function as a process for her to rediscover herself and reflect on herself. She pried and stared at these people and settings, and through comparison, she is seeking the approval of her identity. Through these images, she is also reassessing the land and labor in the countryside and reassessing village life and how it impacted her when she lived there before.
