"The tale of migratory birds with broken wings" is an ongoing investigative project about current state of refugees from different parts of the world who are at the moment stranded in the area of Balkans. Within the project we collect intimate experiences and stories of these brave people from their point of view, using pure and raw documentary approach complemented sometimes with poetic visual language to present hardship and challenges they are facing with. The project involves multimedia and collaborative experience, where the refugees are given the chance to express themselves by telling their stories in audio narrative, by painting and writing over photos, or by making their own photographic work representing their current position, with the main goal to fight against prejudices and stereotypes propagated by many in the countries of their current position and the countries where most of them want to live in the future. The focus of the work is on personal stories of people who had traumatic experiences in the past that left traces on their bodies and their souls. These traces are sometimes even used as forensically valid evidences that count when deciding about the future of these people, like in case when the decision is made about their permanent residency on American soil, when a team of doctors is investigating the wounds and psychic traumas comparing them with refugee stories and experiences to confirm them.
The reason for making this kind of a project in this specific moment of time comes out of necessity for continual approach to this important issue of 21st century, especially now when the media attention and sensationalism have left the camps, border crossings and empty areas of Balkans in between, while the amounts of hatred, prejudices and non-acceptance is on the rise.
