What in in italian is called "journey of hope", started from the ports of Sicily at the beginning of the twentieth century and its aim was remote destinations. United States, Latin America, Australia, coal mines in Belgium and the Netherlands: illusions of a better world, last attempts to escape misery.
Modernity, on the other hand, has turned situations upside down, turning Italy into an arrival and a place of landing. "Prima gli italiani?" was born from the need of brushing up the memory, a way to reconnect the threads with the past, portraits of immigrants from Africa and recently arrived on Italian territory, dressed in the clothes that our great-grandparents were wearing at the time of leaving Italy to seek fortune elsewhere, portrayed as in the photos of the last century where, instead of immigrants from Africa, there were our Italian ancestors.
The idea was born to counter the wave of racism that afflicts Italy in this historical period and in order to forget not that we all are equal.
