The batwa are the original inhabitants of the forest in Western Uganda. They were evicted from the parks of Bwindi and Mgahinga national parks in the effort to protect the gorillas and their habitat in early 1990s
The batwa had spent their their whole lives in the forest, where they gathered and hunted. after eviction from their ancestral land, after more than 20 years, the batwa people are still suffering with no land of their own but the church and non governmental organizations have come in to give a hand and bought land for settling on, though they are still squatters and casual labourers without land for farming and regular income hence limited access to education and healthcare.
The community we visited called mukingo batwa village has 15 units of housing facility built to them by Church of Uganda. with a total of 35 households, the rest are built with reads and polythene papers. They are impoverished, landless with very low levels of education. They survive on handouts and begging.
