AT THE END OF THE DAY - “Aig deireadh an latha"

In a world which is becoming increasingly globalized, uniform, and dematerialized, the isles, in their sincerity, simplicity, and authenticity, represent in the collective unconscious, a peace haven. Therein exists a virtually immutable people: an insular, singular, communitarian, and traditional clan, crafting their own refuge. In these isles one finds a well preserved microcosm, where the experience of isolation has a magnifying effect on these exceptional - albeit fragile - spaces, whether it be on an environmental, economic, or social level. The idea of territoire explores the lifestyle, the personal relationships, and the sense of belonging in the process of self realization in relation to the land. Is it this collective identity which defines the space, or does the space form one’s identity? Also, how to chisel out a path to the future without abandoning one’s heritage? This is the fundamental questions underlying this series of photographs. The ongoing project, which began this January, will focus on the youth, aged 18 to 35, who live in theOuter Hebridean Isles in the northern most reaches of Scotland, on the edge of Europe--on the savage, hostile, and blustery moors and shorelines. At the age of 18, the lack of opportunities leave these youths facing a fork in the road: What now? Which direction to take? What is left to hang on to? Are these isles really the paradise we perceive them to be? Or rather, an escape from the dissatisfying, over-developed, uprooted, and unanchored reality of the modern world? How will they balance the social and economic realities that face them? Can one really find solace and purpose in this untamed landscape, finding a way to exist in rhythm with the island’s natural ebb and flow and restoring nature to it’s rightful place? Le projet «At the end of the day» présente la jeune génération des îles Hébrides extérieures - un petit chapelet d'îles au Nord Ouest de L’Ecosse, au bout de ce qui était il y a encore quelque mois l’Europe.Il fait le portrait de ces jeunes entre 18 et 35 ans vivant dans ces communautés extrêmement isolées, où le maintien de leur existence est difficile, au milieu d’une population vieillissante, une économie décroissante, des opportunités de travail et d’étude limités, ainsi qu’un esprit communautaire encore très conservateur, qui finalement offre peu de liberté que ce soit pour les comportements non conventionnels, un peu extravagants ou les relations amoureuses. C’est une forme de microcosme, où l’insularité provoque un effet loupe sur ces territoires exceptionnels mais fragiles, que se soit sur le plan environnemental, économique, ou social. À quoi s’identifie-t-on à cet âge dans cet endroit? Est ce vraiment un paradis comme nous l’imaginons ou est-ce un fantasme de nos sociétés insatisfaites, urbanisées, déracinées cherchant à retrouver un genre de vie dans laquelle la nature, le paysage, peut à nouveau être ressentie comme un facteur décisif de nos vies? Ce projet finalement nous questionne aussi sur la notion d’appropriation de l’espace ainsi que celle d’identification à des lieux, au genre de vie qui en découle et les raisons d’y nouer des liens. Est-ce finalement les identités qui construisent les territoires ou les territoires qui construisent les identités?
