Youth in Harlem is an ongoing documentary project that aims to explore the ordinary reality of young people in the neighborhood. Here, in a unique and historically underrepresented part of the city, different cultures coexist on the same blocks. The series highlights the daily life of youth in the neighborhood , the intersection of their cultures and how young boys and girls associate with one another and navigate their differences. In a generation where racial and cultural traits blend more than ever before, this body of work explores how they manifest themselves through different traditions, celebrations, family dynamics and friendships.
When I moved to this part of Harlem, I immediately felt close to this community. Growing up in the working class suburbs of a big city, I have always found myself most comfortable associating with people of similar upbringing. I recognized here a familiar struggle and a comforting closeness to this community.
My goal is to continue documenting this neighborhood and to continue understanding the dynamics created by social class and cultural differences.
