This is a series of candid street photographs in and about the city of Belgrade. A documentation of Belgrade and its people living in a process of transition. The serbs call their city ‚Beograd‘, which means ‚White City‘ in serbian. Sometimes melancholy, sometimes rational, i capture daily life in this period of time in a city that (somehow) never sleeps.
I had the great opportunity to live an artist residency in Belgrade in for the past 4 months. The pictures you see here are result of my perception of this interesting city. Belgrade is somehow a few decades back compared to the world I live in. The mindset of the people, clothing, events, daily life, trends, all these things here remind me of greater times way back. Maybe it is because the Yugoslavian war actually is still pretty fresh, people from my generation remember it well.
On the other hand some technological aspects of daily life are more modern than for example in Germany. I experienced the Republic of Serbia and especially Belgrade in a transition process, and am really curious to see what path it is going to take. Belgrade is a really outgoing and active city, the people always on the move. At the same time the clocks tick slower here, being on time is not so important.
This series is ongoing, since i am still working on a daily basis on it. All pictures are taken on a monochrome sensor camera, with just one lens.
