Outerland, as a concept and title, was born out of a conversation with my friend and fellow photographer Marcin Kornacki. We were discussing our approach to photography when we travel without a larger photographic project in mind. We became aware of themes and similarities in environments we were drawn to photograph, and attempted to make a definition.
"Outerland refers to the interface between spaces. The edges and margins of location. Places of transience or impermanence rather than destinations in their own right. These spaces serve either to interconnect or mark the boundaries of territory."
The concept of Outerland is still evolving. Beyond the psychogeography of location, Outerland has become informed by environmental concern, and the influence of humanity over nature. The images suggest a disquiet in the age of the anthropocene. And a cast of people passive and apathetic in their response.
